MR. SHIV
Welcome! My name is Mr. Shiwnarain (Mr. Shiv), and I am a passionate educator dedicated to creating meaningful, engaging, and rigorous learning experiences for students while supporting fellow educators in their professional growth.
I currently teach Regents Chemistry and Software Engineering at York Early College Academy (YECA) in New York City. As an educator, I believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged in investigating real-world problems, collaborating with their peers, and taking ownership of their learning. My classroom emphasizes inquiry, critical thinking, creativity, and authentic scientific and engineering practices.
Throughout my career, I have developed and implemented curriculum aligned to the New York State Learning Standards, NGSS, and NYS Computer Science Standards, creating lessons, laboratories, assessments, and projects that challenge students to think deeply while making learning accessible to all learners.
As a chemistry educator, I have extensive experience designing:
Regents Chemistry curriculum and pacing guides
NYSSLS-aligned lessons and assessments
Student-led laboratory investigations
Regents-style cluster questions and exams
Laboratory safety programs
Scientific argumentation and CER activities
Regents review resources and study guides
My goal is to move beyond traditional "cookbook" laboratories and provide students with opportunities to think and work like scientists by planning investigations, analyzing data, constructing explanations, and defending their conclusions with evidence.
In addition to chemistry, I teach middle school software engineering using p5.js and creative coding. My computer science courses focus on helping students develop computational thinking skills through:
Creative coding
Game design
Interactive media
Problem solving
Digital creativity
Engineering design processes
I believe coding should be accessible, engaging, and fun while building skills that prepare students for future careers and opportunities.
I am committed to continuous improvement and educational innovation. My professional work includes:
Developing curriculum and instructional resources for teachers
Facilitating collaborative professional learning
Participating in research-based STEM initiatives
Implementing Ambitious Science Teaching practices
Supporting student discourse and scientific argumentation
Designing inquiry-driven laboratory experiences
I have also participated in STEM research programs focused on emerging technologies, data analysis, smart cities, urban systems, and community-centered engineering. These experiences help me bring authentic, real-world applications into the classroom.
This website was created not only for students but also for educators.
Teachers will find resources designed to save time, strengthen instruction, and improve student outcomes, including:
Lesson plans
Laboratory activities
Assessments
Regents review materials
Standards-aligned curriculum resources
Classroom strategies
Professional learning materials
Technology integration ideas
My goal is to build a community where educators can access practical, classroom-ready resources while continuing to grow professionally.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy supporting student activities, coaching athletics, exploring STEM innovations, and developing opportunities that help students connect classroom learning to the world around them. I am passionate about expanding access to high-quality STEM experiences and helping students see themselves as future scientists, engineers, innovators, and leaders.
